How to Install Cabinet Door Pulls
Once you finish a cabinet remodel you still need to install the new cabinet pulls. There are a few simple tricks to use to ensure the job goes quickly, smoothly and will look great. So here’s a quick guide on how to install cabinet door pulls.
The first thing you’ll need to do is figure out just where you want to put up the new door pulls. Use a little bit of paste to tack the first cabinet pull up onto the cabinet door. You can adjust the pull up, down, left or right until it looks just right.
Now go to the furthest cabinet and stick up another knob in the same general location. Adjust it until it’s in line with the first handle you stuck into place.
Grab a chalk line and a buddy.
Snap the chalk line across the row of cabinets above and below the two knobs you stuck up with the paste. This gives you a reference point for the height of the door pulls. You won’t have to worry about them sitting uneven on the door fronts.
Now you can just measure how deep the door pull is from the edge of the cabinet and you have the measurements you need to install all of the cabinet door pulls.
Now you’ll want to construct a quick template so that all the pulls go up in the same location.
Grab a piece of wood and mark off the offset you just measured.
Drill holes through the wood that line up with the cabinet door pull and attach bolts.
Now you can take the template and hold it up to cabinet door. Stick a pencil through the door and mark the front of the cabinet.
Next use a cordless drill to put holes in all the cabinet doors at the same time. This will save you time from having to switch out between screwdriver and drill after each cabinet.
Once you drilled out all the pilot holes grab one of the bolts from the cabinet and use it as a test fit. Increase the size of your drill bits until you reach the size of the bolt.
Go back and enlarge all the holes to the same size.
Now you can put down the drill and switch to the screwdriver for good.
Slide each bolt through the back of the cabinet doors. Use the screwdriver to tighten the cabinet pulls to the door facing. You don’t want to crank down too hard on the screws you’ll risk stripping the screws and warping the door pulls.
All that’s left to do is clean up all the saw dust from the drilling. Just vacuum it all up and you’re finished!
Hopefully this guide on how to install cabinet door pulls will make your remodeling job a little easier. These are but a few tips to make the job go smoothly. Just snap a few chalk lines make a template and you’ll have new cabinet pulls up in a few short hours.

Router Bits
Router Bits – Defined as “a cutting bit used in a router”, these multi-tasker tools are a very important part of our lives. You may scoff at such a thought, but consider the number of things in our lives that we come into contact with everyday that a router bit has touched… CNC router bits are used for the sign on the front of your workplace and the numbers or name on your mailbox, stile and rail router bits are used to make the windows of your house, and dovetail router bits are used to make your dresser drawers. Router bits have been used in some kind of mechanism used to create a high speed spinning action for many years, but it was only recently that routers and the router bits that are designed to be used with them came together in a marriage that has made this tool combination so useful to the woodworking tools craftsman of today.
Typically made of HSS, or high speed steel, router bits are designed to withstand very high temperatures and still maintain a sharp cutting edge that enables the router bits to glide through the material it’s cutting with relative ease. Most routers and the router bits they use have recommended RPM ratings to help insure tool longevity and safety to the user. Carbide tipped router bits have the cutting surface covered with carbide, and some router bits contain no steel at all being made completely of carbide. These carbide router bits are slightly more expensive than the traditional HSS router bits, but offer a longer, sharper tool life and are designed to be used when cutting composite woods such as MDF, plywood, and other manmade materials.
It won’t take long to realize that there is no shortage of router bit manufacturers to choose from, so how do you know which one is right for you? Some of the best known names in the industry such as Freud, MLCS, CMT, Amana, and Jesada were put to the test and the results may shock you. In all, 17 different company’s router bits were put to the test known as the Router Bit Matchup. When the sawdust had cleared, Whiteside Router Bits emerged the winner proving to stay sharper, longer and producing the fewest imperfections in the material used for the test. For full details on this test, search “Router Bit Matchup, Whiteside” on your search engine.
Whiteside router bits is a small, 30 year old company located in Claremont, North Carolina. Why You Want A Router Table In Your Woodworking Shop
By Ken Schulte
Everyone that is interested in woodworking wants to make something that makes others say ‘wow”
A router table adds a new dimension to your woodworking because of its amazing versatility. For such a simple concept, a spinning blade, the router table has so many different profiles.
I have always said that when you put your project on the router table it is wood, when you take it off, its furniture.
Here are the top reasons why you want a router table in your shop.
· Amazing versatility
· Versatile edge profiles
· Template following capabilities
· Dado and groove cutting
· Raised panel doors construction
· Precision joinery
· Rounding over wood
· Tables available in Large and bench top sizes
· Tons of accessories are available
· Router bits are available for almost anything
· You can make your own router table, but not your own table saw!
Just think, if you bought a 50-piece router bit set and brought it home, you could literally do 50 different types of cutting. That’s like getting 50 different machines in your shop.
Here are some cool things you can do with “unique” router bits
· Glue Joints
· Mortising
· Lock Mitres (for strong joints)
· Architectural moldings
· Stile and Rail joinery
· Box joints
· Panel raising
· Tongue and groove joints
· Finger joints
· Laminate trimming
· Face framing bits
· Dovetail joinery
· Sign making
· Rabbets
· Biscuit joining
· Slot cutting
· Round overs
· Fluting
· Multi beading
· Picture hanging bits
· Mullion cutters
One of the better aspects of routing on a router table is the ability to attach a dust collector to your router fence. I personally like a portable dust collector that is dedicated to my router table. If you can split the dust hose using a “T” you can collect dust at the router fence and again at the bottom of the table. This keeps your shop clean and organized.
There are so many accessories out there, it can boggle the mind. You can find almost anything for the most demanding project. With so many accessories available, I find it valuable to have a router table cabinet with drawers. Under the table portion of the cabinet is open so the router can breathe. Underneath I like having two drawers that keep all my router table items in one place. I could never keep all the little knobs, allen wrenches, collet wrenches and speed controls, to name a few, all organized. Imagine how easy it is with a couple of drawers to help you keep it all together.
So how do you learn more about your router table? You read, read and read some more. Thanks to the Internet, there is so much out there (for free) that you can learn. Hopefully this article has inspired you to go out and buy a router table and make something amazing.
If this article has inspired you, you may want to learn more about what type of router to purchase when you set up your router table. There are a lot of choices out there and the Internet can either help you or confuse you. I will be posting another article on this very subject.

How To Use a Product Review
I have read a lot of product reviews over the years. I also offer product reviews for the products we sell, as well as use them on blogs and articles to help people with buying choices. It did occur to me that sometimes people can be skewed towards buying or not buying something because of the way the product review is written. When I sat down to look at some factors that I take for granted, I was compelled to put this article together. I hope you find it helpful. It is slanted towards the woodworking industry, particularly routers and router tables. I think you will find that the mindset or theme will work for any type of product.
When reading a review right off the bat I think of these main areas of the person that is leaving the review. These are the main areas in which we will discuss.
- Shipping
- Expectations
- Experience/Inexperience
- Customer Service
- Emotion
- Assembly
- Use period
- Manufacture or Vendor Mindset
Shipping
This is the first subject that usually gets a lot of comments on. Let me begin with this statement. “I really understand the shipping process” I have worked in this industry at one time and I have seen every aspect from a package getting from point A to point B. If there is one thing that is a constant in the universe it is this, shipping companies damage boxes. There is no way around it, and sooner or later it will happen to you. Manufacturers design their packaging around the fact that it is rough world when your package gets picked up and on to your destination. You have to consider the sort facility and the way things get handled. Speed is the ultimate theme and shippers go by how many packages they sort out each night. Being careful is a goal but not always the golden rule. So when an item comes damaged, most vendors jump through hoops to help you replace the item or fix the problem. It is a headache, and if they can design a box to relieve that headache, they most certainly will because it reduces their replacement costs. So any comments on shipping damage really need to be taken with a grain of salt.
Experience/Inexperience
This is a sensitive area, since it is closely tied to emotion. I will try to tread lightly, but I will be blunt in some areas in order for the reader to get the most out of this content. When it comes to power tools, some people just do not have any experience and some have extensive experience. It is hard to figure out who is who when you are reading a review. To be honest, some people have no business owning a power tool, yet they go to great lengths in leaving some scathing reviews. Others have a perfectionist type of view that can give you some great insight about the product. Some are Engineer types that can go into great detail and offer design changes that they think would make the product better. So how do you approach this problem? I think the best way to evaluate it is by simply knowing the fact that there are different levels of experience out there and everyone is entitled to their opinion. You just never really know who you are talking too when reading a review or getting advice from someone, you just have to use your gut feeling.
Expectations
Some reviews are written in sense of an expectation of that product that has either been met or not. If you expected a product to be of a certain design or quality and it is not, your expectations have not been met. Most people draw from this and use it in their review. Another avenue of this thought is that people write about their experience based on using the item right away. Perhaps the tool met their expectation right away but then they quickly grew out of it or moved on in their skill level. The media also has tremendous influence on what our expectations are for products. Most of the time this is based on mass appeal and it’s designed to do one thing and one thing only and that is to sell you the product. Just because someone says they are an expert does not necessarily mean it is true.
Customer Service
Customer service is often commented on but it has some bearing in some instances. For example if you are speaking directly to the manufacture themselves, then customer service can be influential. If you are speaking to a distributor of a product, then how they handle your service situation is up to them and only reflects on their company, website or business, not necessarily the product. This can skew some reviews. Of course good customer service can always be a positive factor, it is really the product you are reviewing not your buying experience. Someone should make a service about that!
Emotion
I choose to add this section because I have seen overtones of this that leak into reviews. Emotion is powerful and sometimes it is hard to shake a pre conceived concept. That concept is from the old “mail order” days when the industry was brand new. Most “mail order” companies sold junk and it was all about conversion ratios and quotas. Today most companies and vendors realize that Internet sales are a huge part of their business and a great way to reach out to customers from all over the world. So here is a concept that I and most good companies embrace. The sooner customers and the general public figure it out the better. (This is the blunt part I was talking about)
Companies want and need to take care of their customers for a very good reason. If you become a customer once, there is a good chance that you will buy from us again. If you buy from us again, you reduce the cost of acquiring a new customer and that improves the amount of money a company makes. Bottom line: if you are my customer, I want you to buy from me over and over again. This is how we stay alive.
I have no interest in making you mad, or delivering a poor product, that would be stupid and go against the business plan. If you are happy, then my life is easy. If you are mad, my day sucks. I like stress free days, so it is in my best interest in doing a good job so that you come back.
Assembly
I thought it was worth mentioning that assembly can be part of the product review formula. Let’s face it, there is a new problem alive and well today and it is most irritating. That problem is the lack of good clear and concise directions. Remember when software use to come with a book on how to use it? Now day’s vendors think it is ok to be vague. I am not sure who thought this was a way to save money or not, but it is irritating. I think directions are an influence but not always the deciding factor. It is worth noting that not everyone is good at the obvious. (Blunt I know) but I am amazed at how often that putting Tab A into Slot B eludes some people.
Manufacture Mindset
Product companies have a mindset of selling product and making goals. Part of the goals is keeping replacement costs down by good design and good techniques. It is just about as simple as that. Some Brands are better at it than others; those are the ones that last in the industry. Look for manufacturers that embrace this concept by developing their authority. Most good companies really enjoy happy customers.
I hope this has helped you with interpreting customer reviews. It was intended in teaching you how to write one, but more of an education of how people write them for the world to see. The one thing about the Internet, comments stay forever and reputations are made and broken over time. Getting a good assessment of a product can sometimes be harder than you thought.
Calling All Woodworkers – Understanding Sharpening Tools and Equipment – Woodworking
Any individual that owns any type of tools knows the importance of keeping them maintained and in good working order. Most of the wood working tools for example are not cheap to buy. In addition, they will not do the best job they are designed for if the applicable ones are not kept sharp.
Keeping the woodworking tools sharp does not only make for precision work it reduces the possibility of accidents as well. This means that you are going to have to invest in some tools just to do the job of keeping the others sharpened. The problem is how do you know which ones to buy for what tool. What you are going to need will also be determined as to the type of woodworking you do. Each specialized area has its own tool requirements. For example, if you do woodcarving or construct wood furniture then your needs will be different.
There are some tools that you can hand sharpen but there are others that will require power sharpeners. You will need to learn about each one of your tools then determine what will be needed to sharpen them.
One thing you are going to learn is that power equipment designed for sharpening tools do not necessarily do a better job they are just able to do the same job much faster. For tools that have been neglected the power sharpening tools work great at removing any build up debris on the cutting components. Most often, these cutting edges are gouged and this really is where you will need the power sharpening equipment to do an effective job.
One of the most popular pieces of equipment for sharpening is the grinders. It must be noted that the shop grinders are not for using on woodworking tools in their original state. They need some modifications done to them first. You will need to remove the original wheel that comes on the shop grinder and replace it with one of the wheels that is designed specifically for sharpening wood working tools. The original blade that came on your grinder is designed for sharpening items such as the blades of your lawnmower or for grinding in general.
Another part that also needs to be changed is the tool rest. You will find the tool rest that comes on the grinder difficult to adjust because it’s so small. This makes it most difficult for any type of control of your grinding. Doing your grinding up grades won’t be difficult to do because they are readily available on the market.
Once you have purchased your grinder and completed the necessary changes to it then you will be ready to start getting your woodworking tools back in shape where they can do a great job just like they were designed to do. Often novices to woodworking tools will blame the inferior job they are doing on the quality of the tool not realizing it’s because of a dull blade. Then there are some that will attempt to just change the blade instead of sharpening the one they have.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this article and learnt something from it.

Low Cost Router Table

I get asked a lot about building lost cost router tables that have lots of features and work well in the shop. I stumbled across this one and thought that I would elaborate on it and share it with you. The table is originally a router table extension for a table saw. This one is for sale at Router Table Depot The neat thing about this particular top is that you can use it for a table saw, no problem. But because it has this nice base around the bottom, you can easily mount it to a stand. If you make one yourself, the possibilities are really endless. The one pictured here is a basic stand design but you can go pretty much as far and deep as you would like.
The Stand

The stand is not rocket science, it is basically four “L” shaped legs with stringers attached to hold it square. The stringers can be also made into a shelf for an extra sturdy design. You can make this whole stand out of some scrap plywood or you can use any other scrap wood that you might have lying around. The whole premise of the stand is that the top slides over the stand and rests on the legs. After that you simply use the base of the extension and screw it right to the legs of the stand.

Router Table Top
The top has all the features that you would want in a table and can accept all the industry standard upgrades.
- 24″ x 27″ deep
- 1 3/8″ thick
- Top and bottom are laminated
- 3/4″ miter track installes
- Insert is acrylic and measures 12′ x 9″ x 3/8″
- Fence is a split fence design and has a solid aluminum core with 12″ x 6″ Extensions
- Mounting frame is 27×21 1/4″ outside diameter and 24 5/8″x19″ inner diameter
Originally you can buy this for $179 (at this printing) From the Router Table Depot and I believe it has free shipping. I can imagine the stand costing you more than $20 to make yourself. Maybe a tad more if you went a little crazy and made drawers, doors and a cabinet style design.

Should I Consider Reconditioned Power Tools and Will They Last As Long As Normal New Ones?
Should I Consider Reconditioned Power Tools and Will They Last As Long As Normal New Ones?
By Peter H Williams
When buying power tools you obviously want to get the best value for your money whether that be discount power tools, very special offers or just maybe factory reconditioned power tools. Whether you use powers tools every day as part of your work or you just require DIY tools for more occasional use the reconditioned power tools retailer is worth searching for. Some products are obviously easier to locate than others. You will not generally find the just released latest factory reconditioned cordless tools the day after the new product has been released but do not let that put you off looking for the bargains in the newer 36v or 24v tools. If you look at the offers available through the reputable new and reconditioned tools suppliers then you’ll quickly get a feel for the available products.
Why would anyone want to purchase reconditioned cordless tools or any other reconditioned power tools? Usually the price is the driving factor with huge savings being available. From time to time, however, someone is genuinely looking to find a power tool which is no longer manufactured and unable to find the product on eBay.
The actual wording can be a little misleading because you’d really believe a unit had been back at the factory to have a makeover when you review the words manufacturer reconditioned tool or sometimes manufacturer refurbished tools. Years ago I had a great Black & Decker corded Power drill which even the B&D guys said was a great product, so when the time came I sent the product back to the factory to be repaired or refurbished or reconditioned. In the 21st century it is almost certainly cheaper to purchase a new replacement tool from a factory reconditioned tool retailer.
So exactly what is a Manufacturer Reconditioned Tool?
Under almost all circumstances a product which has been returned to a retailer has to be returned directly to the manufacturer because it can not be sold as new. The exception is perhaps if the box and packaging of product was undamaged or unopened. Once the product returns to the manufacturer the product will be subject all the rigorous checks to ensure the product meets the as new specification. If all the tests checkout correctly then the product is re-packaged and is in as new condition. In practice the product is new but just done some additional travelling.
If you are purchasing power tools as reconditioned power tools then very often the only difference you’ll be aware of is the word – Reconditioned – written on the packaging. You’ll even get the same manufacturer warranty that you would with your new power tools. Sometimes the factory reconditioned maybe described as factory outlet stock.
Most of the major manufacturers supply reconditioned products but sometimes they will be restricted to a select number of retailers or dealers. Some retailers are specialist suppliers of factory reconditioned tools only. Some manufacturers don’t like to have their regular higher priced power tools available for sale in the same tool retailer feeling that the reconditioned units will undermine the sales of the regular products. Can you imagine the questions being asked about the pricing and the difference between the 2 identical looking products one of which maybe half the price of the other one!
Whether you are looking for a Makita cordless drill, Milwaukee corded power drill, a Paslode nailer, Porter-Cable router, a Bostitch stapler, Bosch reciprocating, an 18v cordless drill or a product from another major manufacturer then just follow your nose and look out for the factory reconditioned tool suppliers.
Power tools have been around for many years – even the first electric drill was used in the late 1800′s. Now a-days we tend to think of Cordless Power Tools as being those used in the home and the more adult versions used in all commercial and industrial walks of life. There always some great deals to be had when you shop around.

Spray Finishing Booths for Wood Working
So if you have been woodworking as a business or you are seriously involved in the hobby, you might want to think about purchasing a spray booth somewhere down the line. A spray booth is a huge step up in a woodworking system and can improve your build times and increase your margin. They do however require some knowledge before using them. You will need to pre plan your ventilation before installing the unit.
When we operated our small furniture business we found that we always in some part of the finishing process. Each part had to be primed, painted, artwork and then sealed. Spraying is just about the only way that you can increase this timely process. When you have a spray booth you will find a way to automate more of your finishing processes since you will have taken the steps to improve your assembly. Not only will spraying your product finishes save you time, but the look is a nice improvement over traditional brush finishes. About the only drawback is if you are marketing the hand painted look.
Spraying takes some practice, so you will need to work on your skills and purchase a decent sprayer as well. Having a stockpile of primer and various color paints as well as stains and finishes will make your job go much faster.
You can effectively paint wood finished products that include:
- toys
- bedroom furniture
- conference tables
- Pianos
- dining room tables
- office furniture
- Children’s furniture
Spray finishing booths are not costly and should be seen as a investment. They give the right finish to your wood working products. If you want high quality finishes to your wood working products then it’s a must.
You might want to weigh the cost of purchasing your own equipment verses outsourcing as well. Outsourcing will take some management since you will have to oversee the movement of parts back and forth from the vendor. A lot of time this may take a person that is hired to specifically do this job for you.

Part 2 of Buying Routers for Woodworking
Part 2 of Buying Routers for Woodworking
Collet size
Most routers today are sold with two different sized collets. The collets is the device that holds the bit in the motor. The two most common sizes are ½” and ¼”. These two sizes match the two sizes of router bits sold. So why do you need both? ½” bits are more robust than ¼” bits. If your doing larger jobs like raised panel, you want a little more strength in your bit size which mostly relates to safety. ¼” sized bits are more widely available in a larger variety of styles. If your looking for some smaller bits for smaller details (like a small cove bit) they most likely come with a ¼ “ diameter. Most routers accept both. If they don’t, it is somewhat limiting, so I recommend buying a router that has both collets.
Power
Bigger is better right? I could go on and on about this subject and most likely argue with a lot of people. Think of this way. Most men think they need the most HP that is available. Its kind of like a car, if it has a bigger motor we generally think its better. Is it? Not always and here is why. Bigger does not mean you can take more off in one pass. You can but is it smart. Every wood species is different. If you take big chunks off of certain species you can burn it or gouge it or endanger yourself. Why do this? Taking smaller bites and several passes is the sure way to quality and safety. If your in production and need speed and efficiency, buy a shaper and a power feeder. For most of us woodworkers a 1 ½ HP will do all that you could ever ask for in a router. The goal is to work in your shop with all of your fingers and both sets of eyeballs in tack. Don’t jepordize that with the thinking that you need 3 ½ HP to spin that big ole router bit. I have a 3 ½ HP pig of a router that is collecting dust because its so big and heavy that It’s a pain to use. Again, preference is the prevailing factor. Bigger is not always better.
Amps verses HP
Most manufactures measure their router motors with a HP rating. This we men understand. The new norm is Amps. Amps are part of the power formula and help determine horsepower. The larger the HP the more amps it is rated for. So what does that mean to you. Well in short, if you have a 15 Amp router and you plug it into your 10 amp wall plug and you decide to run a dust collector at the same time, guess what happens. Yes it’s frustrating to stop and rewire your shop.
EVS
Electronic Variable Speed lets you control the speed of the motor. You want to do this if you plan on turning bigger profile bits. You cannot put a large router bit in your router and spin it at full speed. Some are too big and become very very dangereous. If the router you are thinking about buying does not have EVS you can always buy a router speed control. These are small units that you plug your router into and you can control the speed externally. This feature is becoming standard on most routers offered today.
Combos
Buying a combo pack can be like getting two routers for the price of one. Spending the extra cash is worth it to some people, only you can be the judge.
Price
Do your homework. Price them out. The internet is a great place to price routers than from just buying from Lowe’s or Home Depot. Look around. If your on a budget, try Ebay, but stick to a name brand.
